Military Benefits for Students

The U.S. government offers a variety of education benefits for members of the military. A number of these benefits are available for students in ExecutiveMPA@Syracuse, the online Executive Master of Public Administration program from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. Each government program provides benefits for different groups of individuals. To find out which program is right for you, explore the GI Bill Comparison Tool.

Syracuse University cannot provide veteran-specific student information, so explore the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website for any questions about your own eligibility and the GI Bill. Military applicants are encouraged to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and may also receive an application fee waiver upon verification by Office of Veteran Success staff.

Post-9/11 GI Bill

The Post-9/11 GI Bill provides education benefits for military members who have served at least 90 days on active duty since September 10, 2001. It provides tuition and fee coverage, a monthly housing allowance, and a yearly $1,000 stipend for books. To learn more about the Post-9/11 GI Bill and your eligibility, visit theVeterans Affairs website, or view our Post-9/11 GI Bill Checklist to guide you through this process.

Montgomery GI Bill

Through monthly benefit payments, the Montgomery GI Bill helps active-duty service members, selected reserve members, and veterans with at least two years of service pay for education and training costs. Eligible service members may receive up to 36 months—four years of traditional academic education—of tuition and job training benefits. To learn more about the Montgomery GI Bill and your eligibility, visit the Veterans Affairs website.

Applying for Benefits

To receive the education benefits as listed under the U.S. Code, students must be formally admitted into ExecutiveMPA@Syracuse and adhere to its policies and academic eligibility standards. Students must apply for benefits through the VA. We recommend students apply online through the Education Benefits Application Process page on the website.

The VA processes all applications and will send a letter with its decision. If approved, the student will receive a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) letter from the VA. Once the letter is received, the student must submit a copy of it to Syracuse University Office of Veteran Success by e-mailing it to, faxing it to 315-443-6689, or mailing it to:

Office of Veteran Success

700 University Avenue
Syracuse, NY 13244

Once the required documents are received, the VA certifying official will submit a 22-1999 enrollment certification to the VA to initiate payments. This is submitted electronically, and the student will receive an e-mail confirmation. Upon enrollment, you will need to complete the Request for Certification form for each term that you wish you use your benefits.

During the Program and Post-Graduation

With over 30 percent of students in ExecutiveMPA@Syracuse having a military background, Syracuse University understands the opportunity veterans have to apply leadership skills in the workforce. Syracuse University's Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) provides resources to ensure the long-term success of those military-affiliated students post-graduation. IVMF helps to train service members in their desired industry; support employers to recruit, hire, and retain service members; and assess their progress.
