Other Elective Course Options

In addition to the specialized subject area courses, students can choose from elective options offered on-campus, or through other online Syracuse graduate programs. These elective course options give students the opportunity to take an accelerated track or dive deeper into other focus areas.

In-Person Intensives

Maxwell offers several intensive 3-credit courses during short in-person intensives in January and May, both on campus in Syracuse, NY and at our campus in Washington, D.C. Students may be able to accelerate the completion of the program to 12 months or fewer by taking advantage of two or more of these intensive course offerings, as part of their elective credit requirement.

The January and May in-person intensives are both about one-week long, and there are typically 1-3 course offerings in both campus locations. Online graduate students can take one course per intersession, and it is recommended that students complete at least one term of their online coursework as a prerequisite.

Examples of courses taught during previous January and May Intersessions:

  • Business and Government in the Global Economy
  • Global Energy and Geopolitics
  • Public Administration and Law
  • Tax Policy and Politics
  • Public Management of Technology Development
  • Managing NGO’s in Transitional & Developing Countries
  • Challenges in Crisis and Disaster Management
  • Current Policy Issues in U.S.-Latin American Relations
  • Central Challenges in National Security Law and Policy
  • Russia and Post-Soviet Politics
  • Collaborative and Participatory Governance
  • Negotiation: Theory and Practice
  • Mediation: Theory and Practice

Please note that course listings, titles, instructors, dates, and locations are all subject to change.

Connect Remotely to Main Campus Classes

Occasionally, faculty may offer students the opportunity to connect remotely to main campus courses through a live, web-based video feed using the Blackboard Collaborate Ultra tool. These courses run on the semester calendar. Courses that have been made available in previous years included U.S. Defense Strategy, Nonprofit Management, and U.S. Intelligence (Governance and Practice).

Online Courses Through Partner Syracuse Programs

Several other schools and colleges at Syracuse University offer online courses on the 2SU platform that run on the term calendar. Students can take up to four courses outside of Maxwell that will count towards their Executive MPA, as long as they can make the case for how the course is related to their program of study. Past students have taken advantage of this curricular flexibility to pursue coursework on campaign management and public relations at the Newhouse School of Communications, or project management and entrepreneurship at the Whitman School of Management.
